President Ramaphosa announces 2024 election date

Some political parties have already welcomed this announcement by the president, as they have been pleading with him to declare the voting date

Yesterday evening (February 20), President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the long-awaited date of the 2024 general and provincial elections.

The date will be Wednesday, May 29.

President Ramaphosa said he first consulted with all nine provinces and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to discuss the country’s readiness to go.

In a statement, Ramaphosa said, “The 2024 elections coincide with South Africa’s celebration of 30 years of freedom and democracy. Therefore, I call on all eligible voters to fully participate in this important and historic milestone of our democratic calendar. Beyond the fulfillment of our constitutional obligation, these upcoming elections are also a celebration of our democratic journey and a determination of the future that we all desire. I call on all South Africans to exercise their democratic right to vote. For those who will be campaigning, do so peacefully within the full observance of the law.”

Ramaphosa further urged unregistered voters to use the online registration platform to register.
