Matric class of 2023 ‘makes it’ against all odds

Schools in the Zululand District showed resilience and fared well on the whole. This district obtained an 87.2% pass rate.

It was with mixed emotions that the class of 2023 received their matric results on Friday.
It was mostly joy though, as the Department of Education has shown that the performance of last year’s matrics is the highest since the inception of National Senior Certificate Examinations in 2008.
With a total number of 715,719 full-time and 182 056 part-time candidates, the class performed exceptionally well, despite the challenges they faced, which included rotational school attendance and learning losses during their Grade 9 and 10 years due to Covid-19.
The overall pass rate was 82.9%, up from 80.1% in 2022.
Schools in the Zululand District showed resilience and fared well on the whole. This district obtained an 87.2% pass rate.
Schools within AbaQulusi Local Municipality also did extremely well. Nkamana High School achieved a 100% pass rate, Vryheid High School 96.2% (up from 95.2%) and Vryheid Comprehensive School 89.7% (up from 88.2%). Mpofini High School notched up a whopping increase from 59% in 2021 to 88.2% in 2022 and 97.3% in 2023.
Isolumuzi saw a slight drop from 98% to 94%, while Mondlo Secondary also went down from 96% to 94%. Pionier got 97.5%, Kwabhanya Secondary School 92.5% and Isikhiye High School increased its pass rate from 92.7% to 97.1%. Khondlo Secondary obtained 95.1%, Gudu 82.4%, Filidi 98.8%, Mathunjwa 98.1%, Metzelfontein 75%, Enqabeni 71.4%, KwaNotshelwa 84.9%, Machancha 95.7% and Gelekedle 89.6% for the year 2023.
