Municipality warns of job scammers masquerading as municipal officials

The public is warned against making payments in exchange for jobs, as this qualifies as corruption.

The public has been warned of a scam whereby con artists, masquerading as Newcastle Municipality officials swindle money out of unsuspecting job seekers.

“It has been brought to the municipality’s attention that there are scammers masquerading as municipal officials to dupe unsuspecting victims into paying for non-existing jobs and pie-in-the-sky tenders,” the municipality said in a statement.

“We appeal to all individuals who may have fallen prey to these scammers to report the matter, as a matter of urgency, to the South African Police Services (SAPS).

Municipal jobs and tenders are not for sale.”

The municipality added that they ‘follow a fair and transparent recruitment and tender process.’

All Newcastle Municipality job opportunities and tenders are advertised on its official website www.newcastle.gov.za, in the Eyabantu Municipal newsletter, and in all local newspapers.

“Those found committing such a crime will have to face the wrath of the law and will be prosecuted,” the statement concluded.
