DUNDEE KZN: How to lose weight after the Christmas binge

Your diet doesn’t have to be boring - spice up a salad with some jalapeno and pepper flavored feta.

We all add losing weight to our New Year’s resolution, but how many of us actually follow through with it?

We find ourselves setting unrealistic goals that don’t make sense given the time frame that we have.

Weight loss is not only a physical procedure but also a mental one, in which we need to prep our mind to exercise and diet, not only to look our best but feel our best too.

I personally feel the best way to approach a weight loss regime is to prepare yourself mentally by believing in yourself.

Set short- and long-term goals to help you through your weight loss journey. Reward yourself when a goal is achieved by spoiling yourself with a massage or small gift. Meal prepping is easy and you can count calories consumed by each food product you choose to eat.

Harsh diets do not work because once you stop, you gain all your weight back at a quicker rate. The key to weight loss is to maintain a balance between exercise and diet. It is important to remember that weight loss is a lifestyle choice.

Try to eat healthier by cutting down on fast food meals and sugary junk food. Water has so many health benefits, so instead of reaching for a bottle of sugary soda, rather opt for a refreshing bottle of water. Your body will thank you with clear skin and healthy hair.

Sleep is important as a well rested body is also a happy body. Include lentils and a variety of vegetables into your diet.

Your diet doesn’t have to be boring. Spice up a salad with some jalapeno and pepper flavored feta, grill some chicken and enjoy it with some savory brown rice. There are so many tasty and healthy recipes that we can follow to make a boring diet taste more fun. It just takes initiative and a sense of adventure, in your local supermarket of course.

Exercise can be so much fun if done right, you don’t have to always go to gym to exercise, you can do yoga in a serene environment or even go for a walk and appreciate the beauty of nature. Join a karate club to learn self defense and lose weight while doing katas.

Learn a new dance style while losing weight or even join a club and make new friends while playing sport. So the question remains – are you going to keep making a weight loss resolution and ignoring it, or are you going to lose weight with a balanced lifestyle?
