Trio break out of Dundee police cell

Two of the escapees were swiftly arrested.

Three men escaped from the Dundee police cells this morning after a group of seven prisoners attacked two policemen who had opened the cell to check on cleaning equipment.

Two were later apprehended.

Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana, Umzinyathi Police District spokesperson, told the Courier that the three men, aged between 23-30 years old who were in custody, were facing charges of robbery  with aggravating circumstances and house breaking.

“It is alleged that two police officials from Dundee charge office went to the cells to remove cleaning equipment. They were attacked by seven prisoners who overpowered both of them. One of the prisoners took the cells keys while others wrestled with them and opened the other cells doors and grill gates. The two members managed to prevent four of the prisoners from escaping while the other three forced their way out and the keys were left at the last grill gate door.”

Two of the escaped suspects were later apprehended and the other is still at large.

Three counts of escaping and four counts of attempted escaping case dockets has been opened.
