Ladies’ team makes history by winning for the first time

The 75th Friedman and Douthwaite / Bünger Tournament was a success.

The 75th Friedman and Douthwaite / Bünger Tournament was hosted over the weekend, with a total of 28 teams entered, including teams from Mount Edgecombe, Pietermaritzburg, Umhlali, Piet Retief, Newcastle, Vryheid and Empangeni.
The greens were opened by Peter Du Trevou from Corobrik on Saturday morning, with John Douthwaite officiating the prize-giving ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
It was a wonderful weekend of bowls in summer sunshine, although the players were showered with rain during a short thunderstorm on Sunday.
The ‘stone last’ prize went to Jannie Strydom and his team from Dundee. The ‘stone last’ trophy for visiting teams went to Peter Du Trevou and his team from Mount Edgecombe – however, all was not lost, as they earned themselves a free entry into next year’s tournament.
Third place went to Dupie and his team from Pietermaritzburg, with Sid Price and his Newcastle/Vryheid team picking up second place.
Rita Meyer and her team from Dundee/Newcastle/Vryheid were crowned champions for 2023.

This is the first time that an all-ladies team has won the competition!
A competition like this cannot be held without the gracious support of the sponsors, namely Corobrik, Orange Grove Dairy, De Jager Meats, Spilkon, Fort Mistake Lodge, the Douthwaite family, as well as anonymous sponsors.

Thank you for your continued support.
Thank you also to the Dundee Bowling Club Committee and members for the hard work put into hosting yet another successful and enjoyable tournament.
To all the players who entered, from both near and far, thank you. Without your entry, the tournament would not be possible .
The club looks forward to hosting you all again in 2024.
