Amajuba District Municipality resort to boreholes renewal to confront mounting water challenges

The leadership of the municipality has affirmed its commitment to tackle water challenges and ensure that the residents have access to clean and safe water.

The Amajuba District Municipality has announced plans to restore the borehole system in all three of its local municipalities.

District mayor, Prince Ndabuko Zulu, confirmed that the council had initiated a programme to refurbish and repair aging boreholes in water-stressed areas.

“Groundwater plays a crucial role in community water supply in most rural areas of South Africa. A total of R3 million has been set aside for this important task, which will lessen the burden on the residents. A portion of this amount will also be used to purchase Jojo tanks for the needy communities,” Mayor Zulu said.

He stated that councillors and other community leaders in the affected areas had already begun a campaign to audit existing boreholes in order to conduct a proper appraisal of the work that needed to be done.

“The leadership of the municipality has affirmed its commitment to tackle water challenges and ensure that the residents have access to clean and safe water. Having engaged our people and different sectors, we have concluded that the water issue is serious and needs our urgent attention. We looked at both the interim and long-term solutions while also considering what we have in our coffers. We are excited that the borehole renewal and repair programme will come as a relief to the residents of this district,” Zulu added.

The mayor urged residents in this where this work will be done to help protect infrastructure and report illegal actions such as vandalism.
