Nation mourns death of IFP founder Dr. Mangosuthu Buthelezi

The founder of the IFP and traditional prime minister of the Zulu monarchy, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The Newcastle Municipality and Amajuba District Municipality have paid their respect to the fallen Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader.

On their website the Amajuba District Municipality said:

“We, as a nation, are grateful for you, Shenge. Whom will we seek refuge from now that a massive tree has fallen? He was a great keeper of Zulu culture and helped to put the country on the map around the world. Rest well, you have accomplished a lot, we say. We extend our condolences to the Buthelezi family and friends. We will make certain that his legacy is not forgotten.”

President Ramaphosa has described Buthelezi (95) as an outstanding political and traditional leader, having a played a pivotal role in the country’s transition to democracy.

uMntwana ka Phindangene, as Buthelezi was affectionately called, led the IFP for over 40 years before stepping away from politics in 2019.

He was a key figure in the Zulu monarchy, serving as prime minister under Isilo Zwelithini ka Bhekizulu and being at the forefront at the installation of King Misizulu ka Zwelithini.

Buthelezi had been in the hospital for over a month due to back pain. Unfortunately, his health deteriorated and he ended up in intensive care unit due to complications.

While addressing his subjects at the reed ceremony taking place over the weekend, King Misuzulu expressed his feelings over the passing of Buthelezi stating,

“What happened to us today is unusual. I am crying with you and my people. The Prince has done a lot, not to mention what he has done for the royal family. He also stood for the truth till the end.”

Prince Buthelezi will be laid to rest on Friday, September 15.
