Residents remain outraged as sewage overflow persists on Draper Street

The resident said he has ‘been ill numerous times this year’ which he believed was a direct result of his ‘poisoned’ environment.

Lennoxton residents are at their wits end as service delivery continues to be a concern – especially sewage leaks and overflows.

A drive through Lennoxton by Newcastle Advertiser journalists brought home how desperate the situation is, with both sides of Draper Street drowning in effluent, leaving a horrendous stench in the air and polluting the homes in the vicinity.

One resident who wished to remain anonymous claimed that this had been an on-going issue for several months.

“We have reported the leak(s) to the municipality time and time again. They send someone out to temporarily fix the overflow but within a week or so, the problem just pops up again. We are tired of living like this; it is not good for our health at all, especially for those of us who already suffer from severe illnesses. When will this end?” he questioned.

The resident said he has ‘been ill numerous times this year’ which he believed was a direct result of his ‘poisoned’ environment.

“I have never been a person who gets sick easily, but this year has been a different story. This can only be blamed on all this sewage because it’s affecting our water, our air, and simply poisoning us. This needs to be sorted out before it’s too late!” he exclaimed.

Sewage overflows across Draper Street.

Municipality responds:

Thulile Maphanga, of the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Department, said the Municipality is aware of the issue.

“It’s a reoccurring blockage and the relevant departments have been attending to it,” she stated.

Residents are urged to report sewage leaks by contacting the customer care line on 086 014 4144 and keep in mind that the turn-around time for resolving service delivery issues depends on the severity of the problem.
