Afternoon collision leaves one dead

One person died following a collision on the corner of DF Malan and FW Beyers Streets in Barry Hertzog Park earlier yesterday afternoon (Saturday, July 22)

Charles Steyn of Magenta Medical Services, said paramedics were called to the accident scene at around 17:22, where they found two vehicles involved in the collision.

“The scene was flooded with bystanders who were concerned about a woman who had been thrown from her vehicle.

“Tragically, the woman was declared dead at the scene as a result of her injuries,” Steyn said.

The driver of the other vehicle was arrested on the scene.

A second passenger sustained no injuries. She allegedly refused any further treatment or transportation to a hospital.

According to witnesses at the scene, a third person (unknown) was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.

The witness claimed that two vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz, and a BMW, were racing up and down the street and spinning, allegedly causing the collision with a third vehicle.

However, the BMW was not at the scene by the time officials arrived.

Tensions flared up as a result of the collision when community members, outraged at the death of an innocent motorist, attempted to assault the surviving driver.

“We called for backup, and Magenta’s armed response rushed to assist us in taking control of the angry crowd. The suspect was handed over to the SAPS and will be charged accordingly.”

The exact cause of the collision remains unclear at this stage and will be subject to further police investigations.

The Newcastle Advertiser wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the friends and family of the deceased during this difficult time.
