AbaQulusi has new mayor and speaker

The election of the new mayor comes after Cllr Mncedisi Maphisa resigned from the position and as an executive member of Abaqulusi.

A special council sitting was held in the AbaQulusi Local Municipality chambers on Tuesday last week, where the new mayor and speaker were voted in.
The newly-elected mayor of AbaQulusi Local Municipality is Councillor SE Mkhwanazi from the IFP, winning with 25 votes to 18 against Councillor HB Khumalo from the ANC.
Cllr NP Ndlela from the IFP was elected as AbaQulusi speaker, narrowly winning by 22 votes to 21 against Cllr LN Khan from the ANC.

The election of the new mayor comes after Cllr Mncedisi Maphisa resigned from the position and as an executive member of Abaqulusi. The election of the new speaker also follows the resignation of Cllr MB Khumalo, who has now been re-deployed to Zululand District Municipality.
Vryheid residents took to social media to express how they felt about the new leadership, and also make suggestions as to what they would like to see in terms of service delivery. People are anticipating changes when it comes to water shortages, broken/ stolen power cables and infrastructure, and security at power stations to avoid power outages (apart from load-shedding).
The Vryheid Herald sent an enquiry to the municipality, asking them to further ‘unpack’ their plans regarding service delivery under the new leadership. The new mayor recently launched 12 vehicles that will assist technical and community departments. However, at the time of going to print, no response had been received.
