Residents remain outraged as Newcastle roads continue to deteriorate

The 'pothole plague' in Newcastle is becoming increasingly impossible for drivers to ignore as the situation worsens around the town.

“Driving through most parts of Newcastle has become somewhat of an ‘extreme sport’ as one needs to constantly swerve to avoid hitting a pothole, in the hope that one does not cause an accident with oncoming traffic,” said one angry motorist who preferred to stay anonymous.

“This is even worse when it’s raining because the water covers the holes, and the next thing you know, boom, you have lost a tyre.

“Our roads have been bad for a while now, but the situation is now at a crisis level and it seems as though our municipality thinks ignoring the holes or simply filling them with sand is solving the problem!”

He added that he is now ‘ashamed’ and he is over the poor state of his town – which once won an award for being the cleanest town (in KZN).

“I do not even invite family and friends from out of town to come and visit us anymore. If it’s not the potholes, then it’s the influx in crime and the stench of raw sewage flooding our town, and no one wants to invite people to come visit while our town has turned into a circus,” he concluded.

The Newcastle Advertiser took to social media to find out how other residents felt about the state of the roads around town.
