Newcastle Municipality warns of prepaid meter scam

Newcastle residents are advised not to fall victim to a con artist who is apparently masquerading as a municipal employee.

The scam involves approaching unsuspecting residents, asking them to pay him R2500 in exchange for promising not to switch off their prepaid electricity meters.

The scam appears genuine because the caller knows his victim’s address, the name of the business owners and the registered name of that specific business.

The Newcastle Municipality’s communications unit has distanced itself from the scam, assuring the public that municipal employees are not involved, as “employees would never make such approaches as this act would be considered a serious criminal offense and misconduct.”

Anyone who is approached in this manner is encouraged to report the matter to the SAPS.
