Family left devested as fire guts Suryaville home

A family residing at the Suryaville Flats has lost everything in a fire that ravaged their home this morning, May 27.

Vanie Pillay and her husband were supporting their five-year-old at a sports event at Wonderland Pre-Primary when the fire started.

Pillay’s elder son, a matric learner, was at home with the family’s domestic helper at the time.

They said they ran out of the house to escape the flames, which spread too fast for them to contain.

The fire department was able to stop the fire before it spread to the adjacent flats.

Although the cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, Mr. Pillay blames the complacency of the local municipality, which has not repaired the leaking roof, which residents of the flats have been complaining about for years.

Mr. Pillay believes that water from the leak may have entered the electrical distribution board, causing an electrical fault.

Currently, the family is seeking alternative accommodations until they are able to get back on their feet.

Anyone who is able to assist in terms of accommodation, clothing, food, school stationery, toiletries, or any other items can contact Vanie Pillay at 073 204 7095.
