Mayor’s bodyguards shoots, injures two people during Charlestown protests

Two people were injured after they were allegedly shot at by Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube’s bodyguards during the Charlestown protests yesterday, May 16.

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS corporate communications officer, confirmed the incident, stating that Mayor Dube and Deputy Mayor Sugar Thwala were addressing around 500 community members when the incident occurred.

“They were addressing the community regarding their grievances and agreed to speedily resolve the issues they were facing. During the meeting, the people grew angry and threatened to stone the municipal officials,” she said.

This was followed by gunshots by the bodyguards to disperse the agitated crowd.

This allegedly resulted in a 37-year-old woman suffering serious injuries to her back and a 19-year-old man sustaining minor injuries in the arm and chest.

The African National Congress (ANC) Mbuso Kubheka Region has since released an official statement, voicing their concerns about the shooting and stating that it is not the first time the Mayor’s bodyguards have been implicated in shooting incidents.

Their statement, along with the views of other parties, will be published in an upcoming edition of the Newcastle Advertiser.
