Young boy drowns in opencast dam

The body was handed over to local police and an inquest docket has been opened.

The Vryheid K9 Search & Rescue Unit responded to a drowning in the Hlobane area over the weekend. On arrival at the scene, a 45-year-old man (eyewitness) pointed to the mine’s opencast dam, where he had seen a boy experiencing difficulties in the water while swimming with friends. The 13-year-old boy’s body was recovered at a depth of 1.6 metres. The boy was looking after cattle when he decided to go for a swim in the presence of his friends. The body was handed over to local police and an inquest docket has been opened.
