Amajuba District Municipality warns of scammer pretending to be Deputy Mayor, Lihle Mthembu

Deputy Mayor Mthembu has ‘categorically distanced’ himself from any criminal activities or fraudulent acts committed by the perpetrators:

The Amajuba District Municipality has been made aware of a devious con-artist impersonating the Deputy Mayor by using his cellphone number and requesting money in exchange for employment.

Nondu Mhlungu, of the Municipality’s Communications Department, Deputy Mayor Mthembu has ‘categorically distanced’ himself from any criminal activities or fraudulent acts committed by the perpetrators who apparently hacked his 082 number.

Cllr Mthembu thanked all those who have provided information and alerted his office to such activities. He confirmed that the number has since been blocked in a bid to put a stop ‘to this criminal activity.’

“We urge anyone who has fallen victim to these scammers to report the incident to the SAPS as soon as possible. We also emphasise that municipal positions are not for sale. The Municipality has a fair and transparent hiring process,” Mhlungu said.

“Furthermore, the public is warned not to make payments in exchange for jobs, as this is considered corruption. Those who are caught committing such a crime will face the wrath of the law and will be prosecuted.”
