Newcastle’s very own Sox Da Rapper is reaching for the stars

Sox's efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he has finally surpassed 1.5K views on his YouTube channel. He has also received 12 000 Spotify streams and has been featured in the local magazine, The Underdog.

“Believe in yourself, have faith, and keep in mind that consistency is essential.”

This is the life motto of local superstar Sox Da Rapper, who is taking the world by storm one hit song at a time.

Songezo Mlamla (28) was born in the small town of uMzimkulu in the Harry Gwala District Municipality on August 3, 1995.

He spent his childhood alternating between Normandien, where he lived with his grandmother, and uMzimkulu, where his mother lived and worked.

Sox grew up with three brothers and a sister, and the family was very close.

Reflecting on his childhood, Sox said this was a wonderful time of his life. He added that he’ was known as a well-mannered and respectful child.’

He was also regarded as an artistic child who enjoyed drawing, singing, and dancing and his love of sports, which drew him to the soccer field, was an additional hobby.

“As a child, I knew I wanted to be a successful businessman one day. I believe I was born with the ability to be creative. I remember collecting furniture boxes and using them to make musical instruments to perform songs on the side of the road,” he recalled.

A passion for music
Sox has been working on his music career for 14 years and describes his style as hip-hop and rap which he writes and records himself.

“Because I am such a versatile artist, I perform both hip-hop and amapiano music. I would say that my music appeals to the 90s and 2000s generation, as well as the 80s generation on occasion, because I frequently rap to old school kwaito songs,” he explained.

“Music to me was a hobby which turned into a culture as well as a career.”
