Newcastle SAPS offer tips to prevent smash and grab incidents

Never sit in your vehicle unless you are fully aware of your surroundings. Sleeping in a stationary vehicle is extremely dangerous:

“People who prey on unwary drivers have turned some pleasant rides into nightmares. They smash the window or open an unlocked door and take whatever they deem valuable.

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle’s SAPS corporate communications officer, says whether your vehicle is moving or stationary, always keep the following in mind:

“Close all the windows and lock all the doors. Thieves steal handbags and other valuables by breaking windows or opening car doors while your car is stopped at a red light or stuck in slow traffic.”

“People standing at traffic lights or intersections should be avoided. They may be innocent, but perpetrators associate with them while waiting for an opportunity to strike. They may even point out a problem with your window in order to get you to open it or get out of your vehicle.”

“If you come across any road hazards, such as rocks or tyres, do not get out of your vehicle to remove them. Reverse your vehicle and drive away in the opposite direction.”

“Never sit in your vehicle unless you are fully aware of your surroundings. Sleeping in a stationary vehicle is extremely dangerous.”

“Never, ever, ever leave any children alone in a vehicle. Take them with you everywhere you go. Children frequently and unknowingly give criminals access to your car and belongings, putting themselves in danger,” she concluded.
