Health Minister announces first cholera death

Cholera has claimed its first life after three cases of the disease were announced a few weeks ago.

Health Minister, Dr Joe Phahla, said in a statement that the victim, a 28-year-old man from Alexandria (Gauteng) presented himself in the Edenvale hospital with vomiting, diarrhoea and body weakness. He was given medication to manage the symptoms and sent home.

The second case is of a man residing in Emandleni (Wattville), Benoni. Both men had no history of local or international travel.

The deceased’s body will be transported to KZN for the burial.

Health officials will advise the family and undertakers on safety precautions to take in order to ensure that the disease does not spread.

The Department advises to maintain hand hygiene to prevent possible transmission and to immediately visit their nearest health facility should they begin experiencing symptoms.

Symptoms of cholera include diarrhoea, dehydration (due to diarrhoea), body weakness and vomiting.
