Close to 80 residents evacuated as flooding persists

Newcastle CPF, Newcastle SAPS, Fire Department, SAPS and Newcastle K9 Search and Rescue have been out in full force helping residents safely evacuate their homes.

Nearly 80 residents have been evacuated and rescued from flood hit Finnemore, Jenkin and Sutherland Streets.

Members of various emergency services including the Newcastle Community Policing Forum have been out and about since the early hours of the morning rescuing residents from the lower CBD and Paradise areas which are under water.

While emergency services continue to be high alert, and offer assistance where needed, residents and motorists are requested to practice extreme caution and to avoid travelling where possible.

Talha Randeree of the Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF) thanked all those who have assisted with the rescue efforts, including all CPF members, emergency services workers and volunteers who have been helping with the rescue and evacuation of residents since last night.

“We would like to thank all those who have been out since 6:30 last night helping to distribute sand bags, help residents make their homes safer and for helping us while we were out on the boat helping people evacuate their homes. We also want to thank Cllr Shandy Singh who has also been out with us all hours of the night assisting the community.”
