Amajuba District Mayor launches grain crop production programme

The grain crop production programme forms part of the IDP and Local Economic Development Strategy designed to assist emerging farmers in the district.

Crop farming in the district is set to grow thanks to Amajuba District Mayor uMntwana Ndabuko Zulu launching a production programme that will benefit over 40 emerging farmers.

The grain crop production programme was established through the agricultural development plan which showed that the Amajuba District has a huge potential for especially yellow-maize production, among other crops.

“The soil, temperature, and rainfall patterns in the Amajuba District all contribute to a favourable environment for yellow-maize production, “a spokesperson for the Amajuba District Municipality said.

“Corn is the oldest crop that the people of the district are most familiar with and understand. It has remained an important crop for both staple diets and animal feed, and it continues to play an important role in food security provision.”

Seeds for yellow maize production were handed over to six local emerging farming entities, totalling 41 beneficiaries by Mayor Zulu, who was accompanied by portfolio chairperson, Cllr Lihle Mthembu, Councillors, and Senior officials from the planning and development services department.
