Residents notified of power outages as planned maintenance commences this week

The Newcastle Municipality has issued a notice informing residents of a planned maintenance and outages, as well as the risk of tripping, due to the aging infrastructure being strained by extended load shedding and ‘unforeseeable circumstances’.

As a result of the foregoing, the following areas require emergency work:

Albert Wessels Drive will be affected by an outage on Tuesday, January 10 from 08:00 to 15:00.

The following areas will be affected:

  • Marconi pump station
  • KwaMathukuza , Engen Garage and surrounding areas
  • Ngagane sewer works
  • Albert Wessels Street near Van Kampen Area
  • Gutenberg Street
  • Macadam Street
  • Marconi Street by the Abattoir

A ‘trip risk’ can be expected on Thursday, January 12 from 08:00 to 16:00 as teams decommission the Glen substations (load shedding Zone 5) for necessary transformer and switchgear maintenance.

“Please keep in mind that this is not an outage, but rather a Trip risk. The above maintenance is critical in order to try to eliminate long outages caused by poor or no maintenance,” the municipality said in a statement.

The Newcastle Municipality strongly advises residents to treat all electrical installations as live, particularly during the planned outages.

“We ask residents to be patient as our teams work quickly to respond to the crisis.”
