A local retail outlet was the target of a burglary in Newcastle earlier this evening (January 5).

According to official sources, around seven to eight armed men entered the stores premises at around 7pm this evening and held the complex’s security guards hostage as they proceeded to rob the store.

The suspects then fled the scene using two getaway vehicles.

Law enforcement was notified of the robbery and members of Ithemba Security and Newcastle Crime Fighters Task Team along with other enforcement gave chase after the vehicles, following them into Madadeni.

“Shots were fired between the suspects and law enforcement and the suspects managed to evade being captured,” confirmed the source.

One of the vehicles containing the stolen goods was recovered, however, the second vehicle as well as the suspects are still on the run.

This is a developing story and more details will be published at a later stage.
