Body of drowning victim recovered near Umzinyathi Bridge

A 17-year-old boy went for a swim when he was swept away by the strong currents and drowned.

The body of a drowning victim was recovered at the Umzinyathi Bridge between Osizweni and Utrecht earlier this morning after two scholars drowned in two separate incidents on Tuesday (December 13).

According to Renegade Search and Rescue Amajuba Coordinator and Action SA member, Razia Cassim, 17-year-old Sphesihle Bontle of Maskraal, Madadeni decided to go for a swim on Tuesday, when he was swept away by the strong currents and drowned.

“Thereafter, police discovered the belongings of a 15-year-old girl from Dickshalt along the river banks of the Ngagane River,” she said.

It is believed that she too drowned and a search and rescue has been ongoing to attempt to locate her body.

Bontle was positively identified after search and rescue members found his body in the Ngagane River at the Umzinyathi Bridge.
