Department of Transport dismiss corrupt Newcastle traffic cops

The dismissed traffic officers were apprehended following a combined operation involving the Public Transport Enforcement Services, SAPS Crime Intelligence, and the Newcastle SAPS.

Two Newcastle Road Traffic Inspectorate officials have been dismissed by the Department of Transport after being found guilty of accepting bribes from truck drivers.

The dismissed traffic officers were apprehended following a combined operation involving the Public Transport Enforcement Services, SAPS Crime Intelligence, and the Newcastle SAPS.

To date, six examiners have been charged as a result of the Newcastle investigation into allegations of irregularities at the Driver License Testing Centre (DLTC).

Some of these are charged with issuing learner’s permits to foreign nationals, which the Department has since revoked.

“The dismissals were a clear indication that the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is ramping up its efforts to combat alarming levels of truck accidents on the roads,” the Provincial RTI said in a statement to the Advertiser.
