Police hold ceremony to raise GBV awareness

“We organised the ceremony to let women know that it is not safe to walk at night. We have seen many cases involving GBV in which women have been assaulted on the streets at night. We urge all women to avoid walking and wandering around in the dark.''

Officers from eMondlo SAPS held a candle-lighting ceremony last week.

Siphiwe Nzuza, who is a Lifeline social worker at Mondlo SAPS, mentioned that the main reason for the event was to campaign against the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) in the community and to remember the victims of GBV. The ceremony took place at around 19:00, which saw community members arriving at the police station to support the cause. There was then a peaceful march from the station to the stadium in section B. “We organised the ceremony to let women know that it is not safe to walk at night. We have seen many cases involving GBV in which women have been assaulted on the streets at night. We urge all women to avoid walking and wandering around in the dark, because this is when they become more vulnerable. We also urge male figures in families and neighbours to accompany women when they knock off late from work and need to be escorted home.’’

She further explained that women have rights in society and are allowed to exercise their rights, but at the same time they need to be responsible for themselves too. The candle-lighting ceremony was supported by Zululand SAPS, Correctional Services officials and the community at large.
