Newcastle cops take down ATM fraud syndicate

One of the bank cards was positively linked to the Murchison Street ATM robbery.

Three men, suspected of being members of an ATM fraud syndicate, were apprehended on Wednesday, November 9.

Imraan Ghafoor of the Newcastle Crime Fighters Task Team said information had been received that the suspects had robbed a victim at an ATM on Murchison Street.

“A crime intelligence operation was immediately conducted by multiple law enforcement departments, who followed up on the information,” he explained.

The suspects were eventually spotted on Scott Street, were they were stopped and arrested, resulting in the police recovering the following in their vehicle:

The vehicle was impounded and booked into the SAPS 13 Unit. One of the bank cards was positively linked to the Murchison Street ATM robbery.

All three suspects have been arrested and charged with fraud and theft and will appear in court soon.
