Confiscated puppies found in poor state of health

Gero said she was outraged by the way the animals were treated and stated that it was illegal for anyone to sell an animal on the side of the road.

An animal cruelty case has been filed against a dog owner who recruited a beggar to sell puppies at the traffic lights across from Majuba Mall on Sunday (October 23).

Fortunately, the Newcastle SPCA were later able to locate the owner, who signed over the puppies and their mother to them the following day.

“The mother was in very bad shape, suffering from severe mange, and had to be put down.  The puppies are also in a bad condition as they have contracted PARVO. One puppy has already had to be put down and we are hoping the remaining two will make a full recovery,” said Heather Gero of the SPCA.

She continued:  “A case of animal cruelty will be investigated and action will be taken against the perpetrator.”

Gero said she was outraged by the way the animals were treated and stated that it was illegal for anyone to sell an animal on the side of the road.
