The Newcastle Municipality will publish a new policy for SSEG (Small Scale Embedded Generation) for those who have or plan to install generators for business/residential use, whether these are petrol/diesel or solar.

Action SA Public Representative, Cllr Faizel Cassim, explained that residents would be expected to obtain an inspection certificate and register with the Municipal Electrical Department.

“Registration is free and there will be no charges. Upon registration, the Certificate of Compliance must be produced.”

This, according to Cllr Cassim, is intended to regulate the installations.

“If not regulated, incorrect and poor quality generation can damage the Municipality’s grid and transformers, resulting in power outages and millions of rands in repairs. The Municipality will then be held accountable for poor maintenance and service delivery,” he concluded.
