Districts hires 15 family members of Pongola accident victims

Mayor Buthelezi made the announcement that Zululand District Municipality has hired 15 family members of the victims as road safety assistants to help children cross the deadly N2 stretch of road in Pongola.

A ‘Zululand Day of Prayer’ took place in Pongola last week as a way to heal the wounds for family members and close friends of the children who perished in the N2 accident in which a truck collided head-on with a bakkie.

Zululand District Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi, IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa and local schoolchildren were among those in attendance at the prayer service.
Mayor Buthelezi made the announcement that Zululand District Municipality has hired 15 family members of the victims as road safety assistants to help children cross the deadly N2 stretch of road in Pongola. He said they would be trained by traffic officers and would play a big role in ensuring that another terrible accident does not happen in the future. He also said that the municipality wants to help heal the wounds and bring hope to the families that lost their children.

Nonhlanhla Shangase (who lost her three children) said that although she is still finding it difficult to accept that she will never see her children again, she appreciates the municipality’s help and it will go a long way towards finding closure. Nohlanhla lost her seven-year-old twins and a 10-year-old, who were among the 20 pupils being transported in the bakkie.
