Job seekers continue protest at local factory

The community members alleged that the factory is ‘busy with a contract’ and are not hiring locally but sourcing approximately 400 workers from other provinces, this is according to an inside source.

Today’s protest was a continuation of yesterday’s three hour peaceful protest outside the Brochem factory.

Approximately 70 to 100 members of the community and surrounding areas were seen blocking the entrance to Brochem this morning from around 7am (October 12).

The community members alleged that the factory was ‘busy with a contract’ and were not hiring locally, but sourcing approximately 400 workers from other provinces, this is according to an inside source.

A community business forum has been created with a list of unemployed Newcastillians seeking employment. The forum submitted their CVs to the Department of Labour but this proved futile.

Outraged, it was then decided to obstruct the entrance/exit to the factory, prohibiting employees of Brochem from performing their daily duties.

The protest remained calm for most of the duration until a vehicle driven by a factory employee raced through the crowd trying to enter the factory.

The community members surrounded the vehicle hurling threats at the driver while kicking and punching the vehicle. The Newcastle public order policing and members of the police station kept the mob at bay.

The situation settled down and the protest organisers, along with the relative parties from Brochem, made their way through the security gates and gathered in the parking lot to seek a possible solution.
