MEC Mahlaba launches transformative housing project

Thousands of Ndumo residents were said to have witnessed the launch of 500 housing units.

On September 2, Human Settlements and Public Works MEC, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba launched the Ndumo Housing Project, which is set to transform the face of Jozini.

According to Mlungisi Khumalo, the spokesman for the MEC, thousands of Ndumo residents witnessed the launch of 500 housing units.

Khumalo explained that the project formed part of the Cabinet’s priorities, with the intent to ‘speedily develop and improve living conditions of residents in the Umkhanyakude District.

The project has been dubbed a game-changer for Ndumo’s rural community, as it is expected to attract much-needed investments and create more than 1 000 temporary job opportunities. The majority of those who will benefit from this project will be first-time home buyers.”

MEC Mahlaba reiterated that the department would not tolerate poor workmanship and he further committed to closely monitoring the project from start to finish.

We have directed the contractor that the labour force must be sourced locally, and this process must be biased toward the vulnerable in society, which are unemployed women and youth.”
