MEC launches programme to fill all the potholes

‘’This programme is here to fix roads in all spheres of government and we will be working alongside SANRAL (South African Road Agency Limited), which falls under the Department of Transport and normally caters for the national roads in our country.''

A programme called ‘Operation Vala Zonke’ was launched by MEC for Finance Peggy Nkonyeni in Vryheid’s Dabedabe Park (Ward 10) at the beginning of the month. Vala Zonke is a countrywide programme developed by the National Department of Transport to address potholes across all government sectors.

MEC Nkonyeni was accompanied by local mayors under the Zululand District. She mentioned that, “We are grateful to meet the community of AbaQulusi, where we will be able to talk about service delivery that will better people’s lives. This event took place just as we entered Women’s Month, where women are celebrated for the role they have played in South Africa.” The MEC further explained that women face abuse and unemployment, and that a lot still needs to be done to better the lives of women in South Africa.

‘’This programme is here to fix roads in all spheres of government and we will be working alongside SANRAL (South African Road Agency Limited), which falls under the Department of Transport and normally caters for the national roads in our country. Government saw that road infrastructure in municipalities also needs intervention and everywhere I go, I normally tell people that we have tarred roads that are old. Weather conditions also make roads worse, as heavy rains destroy the old roads that we have and we get potholes. If potholes are left unattended for long periods of time without being fixed, they get bigger and bigger, and that requires lots of money. That is why we now have other alternatives for roads to be fixed as soon as possible. This programme will involve people locally to work on the project of patching potholes faster than before.’’
