Man injured during runaway veld fire

The patient was stabilised before being airlifted to a medical centre in Johannesburg.

Farmers battled at least three raging runaway veld fires, which were pushed by strong winds in the Vrede area on Saturday (August 13).

According to Jan-Henk van Vuuren of Magenta Medical Services, one person was trapped inside one of the fires and sustained burns to most of his body.

A local doctor and a nurse acted swiftly to stabilise the critically injured man, before he was airlifted by a medical helicopter to a specialist trauma centre in Johannesburg for further intensive medical care,” he concluded.

Residents are urged to be cautious when lighting fires during the drier winter months.
