LETTER: Why are rights of women infringed upon by local ‘photographers’?

No one asks these photographers to take a photo and then they have the audacity to demand payment.

Editor –
It has come to my attention that photographers in Wilson Street are violating the rights of locals by taking their photos without their permission and demanding payment. This is uncalled for!
Now women can’t walk around town in peace without having to worry about their photos being taken without their consent.
I was told that one of the photographers said he would post the photo on social media and refused payment.
Is the right to privacy not infringed upon?
No one asks these photographers to take a photo and then they have the audacity to demand payment. It’s appalling!
Something needs to be done, as this is slowly getting out of hand. Why don’t they first ask for permission and explain that they want to be paid, and not just do as they please?
I’ve also noticed that this is done mostly to women because they know some of them won’t stand up for themselves and end up buying into this ‘scam’ of paying for a photo they didn’t want to be taken in the first place.
