Six shots fired inside moving taxi

An off-duty police official is alleged to have discharged his weapon inside the vehicle.

A normal day of public transport turned into horror for taxi driver, Samukeliso Nyandeni recently. While on the road between Dannhauser and Newcastle, the sound of gunfire echoed from inside the vehicle…

According to Nyandeni, one of the occupants in the taxi was an off-duty police official. He said the six passengers on-board had to persuade the official to pay but when he handed over R80 in change, the official allegedly pulled out his service pistol and fired six shots into the roof of the taxi.

Nyandeni pulled the taxi over and the official was reportedly forced off the vehicle by the terrified passengers, including another police official and two pregnant women. They all believe the shooter was intoxicated.

Comment on the incident is still being awaited from Newcastle SAPS.

Bullet holes riddle the roof of the taxi.
