NPO’s conduct holiday programme for children

This programme caters for children in foster care, as well as other children within communities who are under the age of 18.

A holiday programme was conducted last week at eMondlo by the Department of Social Development, alongside other non-profit organisations.

This programme caters for children in foster care, as well as other children within communities who are under the age of 18. It normally takes place when children are on school holidays. Last week, the children attending the programme interacted on different topics like HIV testing, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy.

On Friday, the children gathered at Bhekumthetho Hall for their last activity called ‘physical health’. This saw them taking part in physical fitness exercises and aerobics.

Jabulile ‘Mambe’ Buthelezi, Thuli Ndwandwe and Sizakele Khumalo assisted the children in all the activities. They mentioned that the department works closely with NPOs in this programme, which is aimed at keeping youngsters busy and off the streets during school holidays.

There were more children than expected, resulting in them running short on refreshments. Business people and other organisations are urged to look closely at these programmes, as they work with children from different wards. ‘’Whenever there are school holidays, we visit different wards and conduct the holiday programme. It is for the safety of the children and also keeping them occupied with something positive,” Thuli Ndwandwe from Social Development mentioned.

Mrs Ndlozi, who is the service office manager at the Department of Social Services in eMondlo, commented that the children took part in a three-day programme last week before schools open, where they were taught about different aspects of life. ‘’Useful information was shared by different government officials. We do not only give them information, but also allow the kids to share their challenges as we listen and assist them.”

The members would like to thank the parents for allowing their children to take part, as well as the different NPOs such as Siyathuyhuka Women’s Organisation, Qhubulwazi Youth Organisation, Injongoyethu Organisation, Department of Health and Social Development, and councillors of the different wards.
