SPCA urges responsible pet ownership

The organisation's Heather Gero said most of the 519 stray animals taken in were never claimed.

Recent financial figures have indicated to the Newcastle SPCA that life appears to ‘returning to normal’.

The organisation’s treasurer, Heather Gero stated this during the SPCA’s recent annual general meeting. She was unable to attend physically so joined the meeting by video call.

She mentioned increases in amounts from boarding and the parlour, from donations (despite what she called harmful allegations on social media), and from fundraising efforts.

However, income figures from the pound remained a ‘let-down’.

According to Gero, the SPCA took in 519 stray animals but 90 percent of these were never claimed. She said these figures were even more shocking when factoring in the municipal pound’s intake/claim rate.

Pet owners must exercise greater caution! Own animals for the right reasons and keep your pets in your yards!”
