Needy household helped for 67 minutes on Mandela Day

''As we work, we always touch needy people's lives. However, on this day, we try to go the extra mile,’’

On Mandela Day, Abaqulusi OSS (Operation Sukuma Sakhe) visited the KwaMthethwa household at eMondlo. who are regarded as a very needy family in the area.

Members of organisations like the Salvation Army, Department of Social Development (DSD) and OSS spent 67 minutes donating to the family, which is headed by Ms Mthethwa with 10 children and 2 grandchildren. The KwaMthethwa household was identified by eMondlo DSD and that is when SANTCO from the Zululand District decided to also lend a helping hand by donating building materials, while DSD donated blankets.

Mr Mhlongo from the Salvation Army mentioned that they contacted management from Checkers to donate food parcels to the family. ‘’I would like to personally thank Checkers and Sbusiso Nhlengethwa, who is the manager, for going the extra mile even though it was short notice for them. They really helped with the food parcels. One of the children at that household will be hired by Checkers on Tuesday in order to support the family.”

The children were then encouraged to finish school and focus on positive things such as bettering their situation at their home.
Those involved in the initiative mentioned that helping community members should not only be done on Mandela Day for 67 minutes, but it should be the norm to help those in need.

‘’We really enjoyed all the activities we engaged in. As we work, we always touch needy people’s lives. However, on this day, we try to go the extra mile,’’ the members concluded.
