Mayor donates furniture to youth-led household

The donation was the result of a promise made to the family during a handover on Youth Day.

Newcastle Mayor, Xolani Dube and his team fulfilled a promise to a family in the Lister Farm area this week.

On Youth Day (June 16), Cllr Dube had presented a new house to the youth-led Mpungose family. Municipal Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo said a donation on Mandela Day (July 18) followed his commitment to the family at the handover last month.

Celebrating former President, Nelson Mandela’s life and times, the Mayor, along with Deputy Mayor, Musa Thwala and Speaker, Thengamehlo Zulu, handed over brand new furniture to the Mpungose family on July 18.”

On behalf of the family, Nomkhosi Mpungose expressed gratitude and thanked the leadership for the continued support and commitment to ensuring the family’s escape from poverty.

Khumalo explained that the home handover on Youth Day followed the Mpungose family’s plight being brought to the attention of the Ward 6 Councillor. The tin house was said to be falling apart.

The previous and current ward councillors made this household a pressing priority that required an immediate response,” he concluded.
