Police target taverns and make arrests

One tavern was shut down, the owner arrested and a large amount of alcohol confiscated

Working in conjunction with the Liquor Board, officers attached to the Ladysmith Visible Policing Unit pounced on taverns in the area recently.

The Ladysmith CBD, Steadville, Shayamoya, Tsakane, Acaciavale and Roosboom were among the areas that were targeted.

The aim was to check whether tavern owners were in compliance with and adhering to the Liquor Act.

27 suspects aged between 30 and 45 were arrested and charged with offences ranging from the illegal sale of alcohol to possession of drugs, drunken driving, public drunkenness and drinking in public.

One tavern was shut down and the owner arrested after it was found that he failed to comply with certain provisions of the Liquor Act. A large amount of alcohol was also seized.
