Legacy Cup to return in July

The build-up will kick-start on Thursday, July 21, with the Amahubo Symposium, coaching clinics on Friday, and activations 'around town' in Zululand.

Zululand District is set to be the epicentre of festivities as the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup returns later this month. This was revealed at a packed media launch in Durban. The popular tournament is aimed at honouring and celebrating the international icon and IFP president emeritus Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi for his impeccable leadership.

The Legacy Cup promises to be a major draw card for visitors and soccer fanatics, who will be flocking to the Prince Mangosuthu Stadium in Ulundi on July 23. This flagship programme, which was co-ordinated by the municipality through the office of the mayor, was last hosted in 2018 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi said the Legacy Cup will go a long way towards developing and boosting the economy and social cohesion, and promoting tourism and investment in the Zululand area.

“This event celebrates the legacy of our leader, SA statesman and global icon for the work he has done to develop communities in KwaZulu-Natal and foster democracy in the country. This tournament not only honours the legacy of our leader, but will also showcase local talent, boost the economy, promote Zululand tourism, and kick-start all our sporting activities for the year,” remarked the mayor.

The mayor also unveiled the PSL teams that will compete in the tournament. They are: Malelodi Sundowns, AmaZulu, Richards Bay and Zululand Eleven team.

Manqoba Mngqithi, who is the coach of the reigning champions (Mamelodi Sundowns) of the Legacy Cup, said, “We don’t take a tournament of this magnitude for granted. Our wish as the current holders of the Cup is to play two matches and we will do our level best in honouring this tournament.”

Simultaneously at the launch, tournament director Mr Philani Mabaso reiterated that they would ensure that the tournament meets the standard of the PSL. He announced that tickets will be available from this coming Friday at Ticket-Pro at R20.

This major sporting event was first staged in 2017 and is the brainchild of AmaZulu FC, who wanted to use soccer to honour the legacy of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. The build-up will kick-start on Thursday, July 21, with the Amahubo Symposium, coaching clinics on Friday, and activations ‘around town’ in Zululand.

Zululand District Municipality would like to thank all mayors, soccer associations, media houses, soccer legends and coaches for their participation thus far, and looks forward to the final games later this month.
