Utrecht’s rugby club is rebuilding

Days before the rugby season began in early 2022, Utrecht held its first official rugby practice.

Six years after the club closed its doors, the rugby club in Utrecht is once again in action.

Co-coach for the team, Faan Coetzee explained that in 2021, he was approached by a former player, Bafana Gumbi, who asked for help in restarting rugby in the town. Eventually, Coetzee agreed and months of hard work began.

In the early part of this year, with the help of players, families and benefactors, the rugby pitch was cleared of long grass, bush and ant hills over three gruelling weeks. The clubhouse was cleared out and damage was assessed.

Then shortly before the rugby season began in February/March, Utrecht held its first official rugby practice.

These guys play for a love of the game,” added Coetzee. “It’s all about giving opportunities to the younger players…”
