Weekend marred by high collision stats

Paramedics responded to at least three collisions on Friday (July 8) alone, and more in the days which followed.

Emergency services personnel responded to an ‘alarmingly high’ number of collisions over the weekend, which left multiple people injured.

Paramedics responded to at least three collisions on Friday (July 8) alone, according to Jan-Henk van Vuuren of Magenta Medical Services.

On Saturday (July 9), four people were injured on Hardwick Street after three vehicles collided; Newcastle Fire Services was called to the scene to assist in releasing one of the entrapped patients,” said van Vuuren.

Later that day, he added, four more people were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned on the N11 near Durnacol.

Shortly after, another collision occurred in the Osizweni area, injuring six more people including two babies.”

On Sunday (July 10), a minibus taxi and a car collided on Hardwick Street near the Allen Street intersection, leaving three people injured.

Van Vuuren said paramedics also responded to a number of other collisions involving pedestrians and off-road motorcycles over the weekend.

It is unknown why such a high number of collisions occurred during this time period, but motorists are urged to drive with extreme caution,” he concluded.
