Theft, vandalism at pump station will cause prolonged dry spell

Residents can expect further water disruptions as the damage is being assessed

This morning (July 12), residents affected by the prolonged water disruptions were given more bad news…

The pump station that supplies water to areas in Papkuilsfontein, parts of Forderville and Colita was vandalised and cables were also stolen.

uThukela District Municipality labelled it as “destroyed.”

“We are still determining the extent of the damage caused. Areas that are supplied by this pump station will thus be affected by water shortages. As a short-term intervention, water tankers have been activated to supply water to these communities,” said Communication Manager Jabulani Mkhonza.

He added that the district municipality would be “refurbishing the vandalised pump station in due course” however, no precise timeline has been given.

Sabotage, vandalism and theft from the pump stations and reservoirs has been a reason that the district’s Acting Municipal Manager Mr Mnguni cited, at two community meetings, as being one of the reasons for the frequent water disruptions.

He also assured residents that security at vulnerable spots would be increased to prevent further sabotage and vandalism.

Questions about the security at the vandalised pump station have been put to Mr Mkhonza…twice…but no response was given at the time of publishing this article.

Mr Mkhonza also denied claims that uThukela District Municipality staff have embarked on strike action.
