R10-mil allocated to Newcastle road resealing

The municipality is also awaiting a request for additional funding from the provincial government.

The Newcastle Municipality has set aside an amount for the repairing and resealing of severely damaged roads in town. According to Mlungisi Khumalo, the municipal Head of Communications, R10-million has been reserved for this purpose.

In a recent statement, Khumalo said that after the municipality assessed the damage caused by recent flooding, a business plan was developed and submitted to the provincial government in order to obtain additional funding. The municipality’s submission is currently still pending.

The state of the town’s roads has been extensively reported on in the Newcastle Advertiser. In an interview earlier this year, Ward 4 Councillor, Bertie Meiring discussed the situation and what should be done going forward.
