Penny aspires to inspire with new book

A small-town girl with big dreams that became a reality

Growing up in a small town did not mean ‘clipped wings’ for Prophetess Penny Mthethwa (nee Chonco).

Like most Estcourtonians, she dreamed of a life outside this quaint KZN Midlands town and the opportunity was presented during one of her darkest times… At her father’s funeral.

As an ordained preacher, published author, television personality and counsellor, Mthethwa has soared high, cemented by the foundation she created as a small-town girl.

A life-changing request

Having grown up in Wembezi, Mthethwa (also fondly named Mabongi Chonco at home) reached a turning point when an uncle persuaded her to move to Johannesburg. At the time, the family was grieving the death of her father, so this request was unexpected.

“My uncle Jeff Radebe, said he saw greatness in me and it would be better to come to a big city. Little did I know that it was the beginning of my journey to destiny,” she said.

This journey to Johannesburg was a path that was paved with many challenges, as she soon learnt while working at the OR Tambo Airport in a male-dominated industry. However, this proved to be the catalyst that transformed her life and those of hundreds every day.

“Coming from Estcourt, I did not know anything about aircrafts, so it was quite challenging. However, being determined and having God on my side, I became a woman in aviation. I became an AMC manager, which was one of the top positions in the Operations Department. God elevated me to management positions, sitting in boardrooms in decision-making places,” said Mthethwa.

Her faith grew and she became an ordained preacher and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, majoring in Christian Counselling. Together with her husband, Bishop Ernest Mthethwa, she is a founder of Dominion Life-Changing Family Church in Kempton Park.

Through the years, having acquired experience through her ministry, Mthethwa was inspired to write a book that she hopes would positively transform the lives of readers.

Aptly entitled ‘My Journey To Destiny’, the book took five months to write and publish.

“The book is about spiritual warfare. It outlines various kinds of Satanic traps that were used by the Devil to restrain me from reaching my destiny. I have shared my victory over every pit that had constantly called my name to death and destruction, but through it all, I have witnessed the faithfulness of God and the exceeding greatness of His power,” she explains.

While the book is a personal account of Mthethwa’s life, she says it will resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds.

The lesson she wishes to convey, through the book, is one of resilience.

“With God by your side, there’s no mountain He won’t remove. No challenge is too hard for Him to fix. It doesn’t matter how deep and painful the situation is, endure, as He is faithful. So, if you’ve given up, rise and dust yourself off. That destiny you were born for, for the fact that you are alive, you can still achieve it and even much better. If you get ‘no’, know that your ‘yes’ will come; don’t be discouraged,” Mthethwa encourages.

She says that being a published author is overwhelming, and has plans for a second book.

She encourages local authors to continue pursuing their goals.

“That story you have, it will help or build someone or make them see things they thought were impossible, so don’t hide it and be ashamed; start now,” she advises.
