Illegal miners arrested in Pongola

When he looked back, he saw that one of the suspects had been shot in the arm

Nine suspects were arrested and mining equipment recovered by police on Thursday. Officers were airlifted to Kortnek shaft in the Pongola area to conduct a thorough search of the shaft and dwellings. There, nine people were arrested for illicit mining and police seized various explosive-related items.
Other equipment like generators and drills were also confiscated, but could not be airlifted. The nine suspects had to be walked back up the mountain for about 5km to where the vehicles were parked. During the walk back, one of the police officers heard a noise in the bushes, followed by gunshots. He took cover and fired two warning shots. When he looked back, he saw that one of the suspects had been shot in the arm. The wounded suspect had to be taken to the nearest clinic and then transferred to Itshelejuba Hospital. A case of attempted murder has been opened and the case is still under investigation.
