Shepstone Place fraud case may be handled by Commercial Crime Court

A decision will be taken today

The case against former Shepstone Place Home for the Aged administrator Debbie Potgieter will be on the Estcourt Regional Court roll on June 30.

But this time, it won’t be for the trial to continue, but rather to determine where the matter will be heard.

Current Shepstone Place Home administrator Roline Vaughan  said that the prosecution was considering moving the case to Durban.

“The prosecution realised that the case is too big for Estcourt and sent the files to the Commercial Crime Court in Durban, where they went through the files and it was returned to Estcourt,” explained Ms Vaughan.

The date of June 30 has been set aside to give feedback to the parties about whether the case will be heard in Estcourt or Durban.

“I will not be attending the case, but the prosecution will let me know of the outcome,” Ms Vaughan added.

Mrs Potgieter stands accused of defrauding Shepstone Place Home for the Aged while she worked at the facility for a decade since 2009.

She resigned in 2019 after auditors uncovered irregular expenditure, which they estimated at R1.2 million.

Civil and criminal cases were filed against Mrs Potgieter.

The civil case concluded with Mrs Potgieter instructed to pay R500,000 to the Home; the final payment was reflected in April 2021.
